Drive shaft

Drive shaft so called Cardan shaft (incorrect name, it refers to a drive shaft with Cardan bumps), its task is to convert the reciprocating motion of the engine pistons into torque, which is then transmitted to the wheels of the vehicle through the gearbox.
Shafts are a privilege in high-volume motorcycles; they are not installed in lightweight and sport motorcycles, due to their too heavy construction. It has a number of advantages for which it is beloved:

  • Virtually maintenance-free.
  • The mechanism is hermetically sealed.
  • Then the lifespan of the gimbal shaft - it can be compared to the lifespan of the motorcycle itself. In most cases, this part works without repair from the purchase to the sale of the vehicle.

But it also has some disadvantages:

  • Size and weight. That's why it is not put on sports and enduro motorcycles, where every centimeter and weight counts for better performance.
  • The weight of the gimbal is unsprung, which negatively affects the performance of the rear suspension.
  • Driveshafts are more complex than chains, which means they can be more expensive to repair or replace.

What is the drive shaft responsible for in an ATV?

In an ATV (All-Terrain Vehicle), the driveshaft is responsible for transferring power from the engine to the wheels. It is a mechanical component that connects the transmission to the rear differential, which in turn drives the wheels. The driveshaft is usually located along the bottom of the ATV, running parallel to the frame.

The driveshaft works by using the rotational force from the engine to turn a gear or pulley at the end of the transmission, this rotational force is then transferred to the other end of the driveshaft, which is connected to a gear or pulley on the differential. This in turn causes the gears on the differential to turn, which in turn causes the wheels to turn, propelling the ATV forward.

The driveshaft is responsible for transferring power from the engine to the wheels and plays a key role in the overall performance of the ATV. It must be able to transfer power efficiently, and it must be able to withstand the stresses and strains of off-road driving.

Note that some ATVs use a direct drive system, where the engine is connected directly to the rear wheels and the driveshaft is not used.
