Fuel filter

If you experience drops in engine power, especially noticeable when overloaded, it's a good idea to check your motorcycle's fuel filter and replace it immediately if necessary. It is an inexpensive consumable component that you don't think about until it breaks down. It is what protects the engine from those contaminants that are in the fuel, thereby increasing its life. Changing filters in a timely manner helps keep your vehicle in good shape for years to come.

What is the motorcycle fuel filter responsible for?

Fuel filters are used to remove from gasoline any solid elements that may have gotten into it. The better made the filter is, the better it cleans the fuel. It is placed between the fuel tank and the engine as close to the fuel pump as possible. Gasoline passes through special filter particles and impurities are removed. Fuel filters cannot be cleaned, once the pores in it become clogged, it is simply replaced with a new one. The old filter should be discarded.

Construction and types of fuel filters

The filter system consists of a coarse and fine filter. The first level is the coarse mesh, which is used to sift out coarser particles. Next is the fine filter system, which traps smaller particles. The fuel filter is mounted on the fuel path from the gasoline tank to the combustion chamber. If the design includes a pump, the filter is mounted between the pump and the fuel tank. There are two types of gasoline filters:

  • Disposable - at the end of its useful life, the filter is simply discarded, and a new one is installed in its place
  • Reusable - removable. This is a design that can be taken apart, cleaned, and can be reused after a certain period of use.

However, a disposable fuel filter is more practical and easier to use. It is inexpensive, so reusable filters are practically not used today. Fuel filters are also classified by location: immersion filters are mounted directly inside the fuel tank. It is a one-piece piece that is connected to a gasoline pump, a screen for pre-filtration and a sensor that indicates the fuel level. The line filter is mounted on the section between the fuel tank and the pump. If the motorcycle design does not provide for such a filter, the first stage of cleaning is carried out directly inside the fuel tank.

When should the fuel filter be replaced?

For each vehicle there are rules and regulated time of filter replacement, but they do not give a uniform instruction, you simply need to observe the behavior of your unicycle. For example, if you have been using lower quality fuel for a while, the fuel filter should be replaced sooner than expected. Gasoline sold at gas stations can have various inclusions and small amounts of fine particulates. These can block areas along the fuel path, so that the engine does not receive the right amount of gasoline.

Which fuel filter should you choose?

The principle of all gasoline filters is the same. When choosing a new filter, pay attention to:

  • The diameter of the fuel line
  • Closed or transparent type - if your motorcycle is not designed so that the filter can be seen without removing the plastic body parts, the closed type will suffice
  • Replaceability of the filter element (in this case, you can replace the filter element and reuse the housing) - however, they are rare
